Fish in a Japanese supermarket

I’ve lived in Japan for more than 11 years and I still find things that surprise me at times, like this unpackaged fish at the supermarket.

Fish at the Supermarket

How do you buy it? Well, you tell the staff member in charge of fish which one(s) you want, and they’ll get it, gut it and package it for you (not too differently from European indoor markets, actually).

I may have seen it before and not paid attention. I did notice the whole thing today because an old guy didn’t ask for the employee to grab the fish. He directly took two by the tail and brought them to the employee’s table. Ojichan doing ojichan things, I guess.
